Canadian Yachting Assocation - Press Release - November 2007:
William Abbott Senior Trophy - Sail Training Program of the Year
In 1991, at the second annual CYA Sail Training Symposium, the Sarnia Yacht Club donated a trophy in honour of William Abbott Senior, who as well as being one of Canada's best known yacht builders, has contributed significantly to sail training. The purpose of the trophy is to recognize the many fine programs run throughout Canada and to share the information among clubs for the improvement of their sail-training programs.
The 2007 recipient of the William Abbott Senior Trophy is WaveSkills Sailing School, Charlottetown, PE.
Ellen MacPhail, founder of WaveSkills Sailing School, became the first CYA certified instructor on Prince Edward Island and opened the school to assist new sailors and fill the education gap that existed for sailing on the island. The school offers CYA accreditation as well as social events for adult students, boat sharing initiatives, and other accreditation through the Canadian Power & Sail Squadron, Transport Canada and ISAF. The school's programs enhance sailing education and social interaction for new and veteran sailors alike. WaveSkills has been called "an education destination" by students from the United States.
